Tubular vs Maintenance-Free Batteries for UPS & Inverters
Load-shedding and backup power make the battery the heart of any UPS or inverter setup. The two most common choices are tall tubular and maintenance-free (MF) batteries. Both are genuine AGS products — but they suit different needs.
Tall Tubular batteries
Tubular batteries are the workhorse of backup power.
- Longer life — typically 4–6 years with proper care.
- Designed for deep cycling — they handle repeated discharge/charge cycles well, which is exactly what an inverter does.
- Lower cost per year of life — cheaper over the long run despite needing maintenance.
- Require topping up — you must add distilled water periodically.
- Emit some gases — best installed in a ventilated area.
Best for: homes and shops with frequent, long power cuts where the battery cycles deeply every day.
Maintenance-Free (MF) batteries
MF batteries are sealed and use advanced chemistry.
- Zero maintenance — no water top-up ever.
- Clean and spill-proof — safe for indoor or office use.
- Faster charging and lower self-discharge.
- Higher upfront cost and slightly shorter cycle life than tubular for heavy deep-cycling.
Best for: offices, homes with short/infrequent outages, or anyone who wants a clean, fit-and-forget battery.
How to choose
Ask two questions:
- How long and how often does the power go out? Long, daily cuts → tubular. Short or occasional cuts → MF.
- Can you top up water every couple of months? If not, choose MF.
Match it to the inverter
Always pair the battery type and Ah capacity to your inverter's rating. An undersized battery overheats and ages fast; an oversized one wastes money.
