Pakistan's long, hot summers and heavy stop-start city driving are tough on car batteries. The good news: a few simple habits can add one to two years to your AGS battery's life.

Why heat kills batteries

Heat speeds up the chemical reaction inside the battery. That sounds good, but it actually causes internal corrosion and water loss — the leading reason batteries in hot climates fail earlier than the warranty period. Once the plates corrode, no amount of charging brings the battery back.

1. Keep it clean and tight

Corrosion around the terminals blocks current and forces the alternator to work harder. Every month or two:

• Brush the terminals with a wire brush.
• Coat them with a thin layer of petroleum jelly or terminal grease.
• Make sure the clamps are tight and the battery is strapped down — vibration damages internal plates.

2. Don't kill it with short trips

A 5-minute drive doesn't recharge what the starter used. Repeated short trips leave the battery partially discharged, which sulfates the plates and shortens life. If most of your driving is short, take the car for a 20–30 minute drive weekly, or use a charger occasionally.

3. Top up distilled water (conventional batteries)

If you have a conventional (non-MF) AGS battery, check the electrolyte level monthly and top up with distilled water only — never tap water or acid.

4. Switch off before you start

Turn off the AC, headlights and stereo before starting the engine. This reduces the surge the battery has to deliver and protects it.

5. Don't let it sit flat

If the car isn't used for a week or more, the battery slowly drains. For long parking, disconnect the negative terminal or use a trickle charger. A fully discharged battery that's left that way is often permanently damaged.

6. Get a free check every season

Have the battery tested before summer and before winter. Catching a weak battery early means you replace it on your schedule — not on the road.
